Maui Paddle Boarding
Stand up paddle boarding (abbreviated SUP) or stand up paddle surfing (when done with waves) is one of the most rapidly growing sports around the world. A combination of surfing and paddling, stand up paddling originated in Hawaii decades ago as Waikiki beach boys stood on their surfboards, navigating with outrigger paddles, in order to take pictures of tourists during their surfing lessons.
SUP is easier to learn than surfing, and most beginners can be up on the board in less than 30 minutes with proper instruction. Napili Bay is one of the best places on Maui to learn SUP, as the crescent-shaped bay is protected by an outer reef, making the waters generally calm and easy to navigate. If you have never tried SUP, we highly recommend you start with a lesson before you hit the waves. You’ll learn the proper procedures for mounting the board, paddling, turning, and stopping, and you’ll be taught about ocean safety issues. Once you’ve learned the basics properly, you’ll have a lot more fun out there on the waves!
Once you’ve learned to SUP and are ready to enjoy it on your own, 808Boards offers all day board rentals at a reasonable price with free delivery for Mauian guests.
